Student Activists Shutdown Tancredo's Nativism

by: DreamActivist

Sat Apr 18, 2009 at 19:17:35 PM EST

Former Congressperson, Tom Tancredo, was not allowed to speak at a recent event in University of North Carolina hosted by the Youth for Western Civilization [Read: Youth Against Multiculturalism and Diversity].

Protestors shutdown the event through their non-violent chanting. Someone threw a brick through a window. And just for that, all hell broke lose or so the media spins. Our resident anti-immigrant demagogue William Gheen was quick to compare it to the persecution of Jews.

That's really a case of the pot calling the kettle black given that his organization--ALIPAC--has ties to right wing hate groups according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Setback for free speech?  Boo-hoo. Get over it.

At least Tancredo and his cronies do not have to worry about being invaded and detained by ICE whenever they practice their hate free speech.

This is also the same Tom Tancredo that asked ICE to arrest and detain college immigration advocates when they were testifying for the DREAM Act in 2007.

Apparently, ‘free speech’ is only convenient when the speech in question is in agreement to one’s own sentiments and belief systems.

Hate Speech, Vandalism, and Death Threats Have No Place in Immigration Debate or the Election

by: kesquivel@nclr.org

NCLR launched http://www.WeCanStoptheHate.org to address the surge of hate and violence infecting the immigration debate, but this is not the only place where hate is showing up these days.  Extremists are now bringing hate into the voter debate and the portrayal of people of color.  Most recently, the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN) was bombarded with malicious emails, voicemails, and death threats, and transgressors vandalized their Boston and Seattle offices.

The Emails:

"_____ is going to have her life ended."

Email #2:

"You blue gums are not going to steal the election.  All of you porch monkeys need to go back to Africa."

Chicago Resolution Condemning Hate Speech Introduced

by: rachelfirm

Wed Jun 25, 2008 at 15:03:27 PM EST

Courtesy of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights:

Chicago- "Joined by leaders from the immigrant community, Aldermen George Cardenas of the 12th Ward and Manny Flores of the 1st Ward today introduced a resolution for the Chicago City Council that condemns the increasingly venomous tone of the national immigration debate and reaffirms the City's support for sensible solution for the immigration issue.

"Throughout our history, Chicago has welcomed immigrants from around the world, including my own family," said Alderman Cardenas at a City Hall press conference announcing the resolution.  "Our city was built by immigrants, and has respected the contributions that immigrants have made and will continue to make.  Unfortunately, the overall climate surrounding the immigration issue has turned more and more ugly, fed in particular by cable news.  It's time that our city took a stand against the hateful rhetoric."

The media watchdog group Media Matters Action Network recently released "Fear and Loathing in Prime Time: Immigration Myths and Cable News," a report documenting how Lou Dobbs and Glenn Beck of CNN and Bill O'Reilly of Fox News use vitriol and myths to stoke anti-immigrant hysteria.

"The Media Matters report documents in great detail how Dobbs, O'Reilly, Beck, and others have used distortions and misrepresentations to portray immigrants in a negative light and push an anti-immigrant agenda," said Fred Tsao of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.  "We applaud Aldermen Cardenas and Flores for standing with immigrants and against hate."

While calling for an end to hateful anti-immigrant rhetoric, the resolution reaffirms the City's support for humane, practical solutions to the immigration issue.  "Our city has stood by immigrants, and has consistently supported legalization of hardworking undocumented immigrants and other reforms," said Alderman Flores.  "We hope that our federal government will hear our message and pass immigration reform soon."

ALIPAC stands for "Anti Latino Immigration"

by: DreamActivist

Sat Jun 07, 2008 at 16:52:24 PM EST

William Gheen, the President of ALIPAC.us (not to be mistaken for ALIPAC.net) claims that his site is not a hate group and not anti-immigrant; they are in fact, pro-legal immigration and anti-(illegal)-immigration, and 1 out of 5 members belong to a minority ethnic group. He was incredibly upset by a Charlotte Observer article a few days ago that called him an immigrant-scapegoating bigot, after highlighting his rhetoric:

We have a destructive human tsunami headed our way,” said William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration, a political action committee based in Raleigh that pushes anti-immigrant legislation. “N.C. lawmakers must act now to protect American jobs, tax resources and lives. Our state must … batten down the hatches immediately.”

I decided to give him and ALIPAC.us the benefit of doubt and check out their discussion forum to see their discourse and what kind of actions they advocate against "illegal immigration." The following is what I uncovered in a couple hours:

Hate

by: mariachi mama

Wed Apr 30, 2008 at 22:37:42 PM EST

At this point I am less concerned about immigration reform and more about the rise in eliminationist talk about..immigrants, i.e. Mexicans or other swarthy hordes.

The NCLR website was a good idea, but it's boring. They need new content daily, and there is plenty out there.

They should expose the idiocy of a Wisconsin principal being threatened with death because the Spanish class recites the pledge in Spanish a couple of times a year. This is the true insanity and people need to hear about it.
