by Nezua, TMC MediaWire Blogger The Latino/a community has had ample reason to hope that President Obama would take on immigration reform in a humane manner. While Obama is undeniably centrist in his political approach, and has long been fond of language stressing punitive solutions to the immigration issue, he certainly seems to understand that "America is changing and we can't be threatened by it." Enforcement policies are becoming a threat, not only to immigrants, but the country at large.

Last Friday, 13 people were killed at the American Civic Association in Binghamton, New York. The event shocked the nation and was "the worst mass shooting in the United States since the 2007 massacre at the Virginia Tech college," as New America Media reports. Because the violence erupted at an immigrant service center, the immigrant community has been especially affected, and immigration opponents are predictably using the tragedy to justify, or at least voice, their vitriol toward the undocumented population.

by Nezua TMC MediaWire Blogger Last week, President Obama announced his intention to address immigration reform in the next few months in a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. The statement came as a relief to many, especially with recent reports of human rights abuses within the U.S. detention system. But, as most of the President's statements seem crafted to appeal to warring political constituencies, his actual intentions are still elusive.

On Thursday, March 19, another workplace raid occured. Bay County Sheriff's Office Illegal Alien Enforcement Unit (a 287(g) group) and the Panama City ICE group conducted the raid. Workers were arrested at "Construction Enterprise Inc." located at the Waterside Apartments of Jenks Avenue construction site in Panama City, FL. Panama City is just miles down Highway 30 from Chilean Student murderer Dannie Baker's Miramar Beach, FL neighborhood. Panama City is also the Headquarters for the "League of the South", a group listed as a racist hate group by the SPLC.

The Obama Administration seems quite capable centrist positioning on many issues, including immigration reform. While some argue centrist position allows Obama to effectively reach consensus, immigration reform is an issue that he cannot play sides with.

Late Breaking News: During Congressional Testimony today, Janet Napolitano was asked by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) about the ICE raid in Washington. Napolitano said she had not heard about the raid in advance and was surprised to find out about it this morning. She asked ICE to send her details about it today so she could review why it was carried out. In her testimony, she said enforcement should target employers and felonious criminals versus targetting workers.

According to a new study by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center, Latinos accounted for 40% of all people sentenced to federal crimes in 2007, even though they made up only 13% of the U.S. adult population. This is clearly a result of all of the Racial Profiling brought about by the 287(g) policies and the restrictionist policies promoted by the ANTI Immigration Reform forces.
The study, which relied on data from U.S. Sentencing Commission statistics, analyzed the ethnic makeup and citizenship status of offenders sentenced in federal courts in the U.S. from 1991 to 2007.

A Prison Uprising is underway at the Reeves County Detention Center (RCDC). This is the second uprising in 2 months. The detainees say prison conditions are inhumane and they lack needed medical treatment. The trigger setting them off in December was a prisoner dying.
This center is located in Pecos, Tx, an extremely "out of the way" location. It houses approximately 2,400 minimum security inmates and immigration detainees. It is operated by the GEO group. GEO attempted to cover up the reason for the prisoner's death by saying the young prisoner died of natural causes. The detainees, risking their lives, protested.

Conservative Pundit Mort Kondracke (Fox News-Beltway Boys) says there is a strong possibility Comprehensive Immigration Reform may pass in 2009. The PRO Immigration Reformers have found their Sea Legs with their strong Latino Democratic showing in this year's election and are pushing their agenda with President Obama. Meanwhile, President Bush said one of his biggest failures was not pushing CIR strongly enough and he pandered to the Republican base with his workplace raids, mass deportation efforts and rigorous employment verification.
Kondracke said the ANTI Immigration Reformers will continue to push their so called "ANTI Amnesty" (Mass Deportation) platform, but to no avail.

From Talk Left:
A workplace raid a la Postville, Iowa appears imminent in Mississippi. From the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance:
A series of preparations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on the Gulf Coast has local advocates on edge about the possibility of yet another worksite raid, and yet another devastating blow to businesses, families and communities in the name of immigration enforcement.
"The preparations we are seeing ICE make are alarmingly similar to what occurred immediately prior to the raid on the Agriprocessors, Inc. Kosher meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa, a few months ago, " said Patricia Ice, an immigration attorney and spokesperson for MIRA. ICE has reportedly booked dozens of rooms in hotels on the Gulf Coast. They may be checking in as early as tonight.
Seems the Postsville raids turned out to be a happy success for Julie Myers and her ICE, so they thought they'd expand the party.
Anyone know anything further about this?

Today's SanctuarySphere post brings us the terrible story of ICE raids in Rhode Island courthouses yesterday leading to dozens of arrests. Once again people hard at work are rounded up like cattle and taken away while their families sit worried and waiting. As more information is made available we'll provide it here. Another member of The Sanctuary brought up a good point over at Problem Chylde. While the candidates get to 'decide' their stance on raids and immigration people are being arrested by ICE and thrown into detention. These workers don't have the luxury of waiting for the candidates to 'get around to it.' We need answers now! Read the post at Vivir Latino - Latest Mass ICE Raid Site: Providence, Rhode Island. News articles: Community says no to ICE Raids in Providence! - ABC (w/video) Bryan Monaghan Story Created: Jul 15, 2008 at 10:11 PM EDT Dozens of advocates and activists demonstrated outside of the downtown Providence ICE office on Tuesday night, protesting an late afternoon raid. Representatives from Immigration and Customs Enforcement tell ABC 6 that almost two dozen people were rounded up, from Kent County Courthouse in Warwick and from the Providence District Court building.

From CASA de Maryland -
Annapolis Painting Service Immigration Raid: Families Separated; A Community in Crisis
Between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Monday, June 30th, 75 federal immigration officials and 50 Anne Arundel County police conducted raids at the offices of Annapolis Painting Service and private homes.
Forty-five people were aroused from sleep, seized on the way to work, forced to the ground at gun-point, hand-cuffed in their living rooms, pulled half-clothed from the shower, prohibited from using the bathroom, arrested in front of young children, or otherwise dragged from livelihoods, communities and families.
While officials have repeatedly stated that purpose of the raid was to investigate the business practices of Annapolis Painting Services(APS), many of the people arrested had either never worked at APS or had resigned. Those who worked for APS painted homes, others were bakers, all were hard workers contributing to the Annapolis economy.
In the aftermath of this raid, hundreds of people, including small U.S. citizen children, have been thrown into crisis in a county whose executive is clearly unsympathetic to their needs. Of the 45 people taken into custody, more than half were moved out of Maryland within days and are already as far away as Texas and New Mexico.
Another 20 people are still in Maryland, but in detention centers far-flung from their families. In the aftermath in Annapolis, families are now homeless and many have lost their primary breadwinners. Families are terrified of interacting with governmental systems like schools and clinics, and certainly the police.
We are in the midst of a humanitarian crisis.
For that reason, we are reaching out to you. Families affected by the raid have multiple needs that only people of faith and empathy can fulfill. Washington has failed to pass immigration reform and it is our communities that are left suffering the consequences. Below are some critical areas that we need your help with.
*Volunteering free housing
*"Sponsoring" a family by raising funds to assist with emergency financial needs
*Donating money to a bond fund so those arrested who pose no risk to our communities can be reunited with their families as quickly as possible
*Volunteering free or reduced cost child care for families affected by the raid
*Organizing a collection of in-kind donations (food, toys, clothing)? to respond to the basic food and service needs of families
*Providing rides to family members so they can visit their loved ones in detention
*Visiting people in detention to keep their spirits up
There are creative ways in which this can be done. You or your congregation can adopt a family, you can host a fundraiser in your home, you can take up a special collection. We can assist you with any of these activities. If you or your congregation could help with these needs, please call CASA de Maryland at 410-732-7777 or e-mail Elizabeth Ortiz and eortiz@casamd.org .

An immigrant community in Iowa was shattered Monday by a huge ICE raid that appears to still be in progress. Susan Saulny of the New York Times reports: In the biggest workplace immigration raid this year, federal agents swept into a kosher meat plant on Monday in Postville, Iowa, and arrested more than 300 workers.
The authorities said the workers were suspected of being in the United States illegally or of having participated in identity theft and the fraudulent use of Social Security numbers.
A spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement would not say how many people had been rounded up beyond the initial 300 or whether the management and owners of the plant, AgriProcessors, would face criminal charges.
The plant has 800 to 900 people and is the country’s largest producer of meat that is glatt kosher, widely regarded as the highest standard of cleanliness.
