The Sanctuary is more than just a community blog or place for like-minded individuals to discuss the issues of concern for all those interested in migrant rights and the struggle for humane and practical immigration reform.

Our goal is to create an on-line community to share information, organize, engage in activism, and come together under one roof to unite in our efforts to effect change.

In order to do that, the information presented at the site needs to be organized and readily accessible to both members and those visiting looking for content.

With that in mind, we have a system of organizing site content to make it easier to find specific information.

Tags - "Tags" are the indexing system used to help organize the information at The Sanctuary. They allow not only members, but visitors, to look for specific content. They are keywords that identify the concepts and content of a diary.. . For example, if someone wanted to know about a specific piece of legislation, they could search the Tags for that bill's number ie: "HR4437", or name, ie; "Dream Act".

The diary author must choose at least one tag for the diary to be posted.

As far as the rules for tagging go, they are pretty straight forward: Keep it simple

1. Use at least one tag on every diary you write ( you can use as many as you want - the more options you provide- the better chance someone will  find your diary)

2.   Use full names for people ie: Barack Obama ...not Obama

3. Use Legislation Numbers when referring to bills

4. Use combinations of simple tags rather than inventing complex ones. For instance, use tags RAID, SWIFT and IOWA, instead of SWIFT-RAID-IOWA

5. Use commas between your tags. Not spaces, not periods, not semicolons

Subjects - In order to keep The Sanctuary organized and the information presented here easily accessible  in addition to TAGS, we use a system of twenty Global  Catagories  called SUBJECTS to assign diaries searchable keywords.  The list of  SUBJECTS is available on the front page. When you post a diary you must choose ONE subject from the DIARY TOPIC box towards the bottom of the page  that best describes the broad category your diary fits in:

Action Alert - Diaries calling for action, be it legislative, information dissemination, or media outreach.

Border Issues - Anything to do with the border, from border deaths, to the wall, militarization, border patrol, etc.

Detention - Anything to do with the  incarceration, detention or  deportation  of migrants

Election 2008

Free Trade - Anything to do with free trade, globalization, foreign or economic policy, and it's effects on driving migration

Hate  - Diaries about hate groups, hate speech, hate crimes

- Use this subject to have your diary placed in the HOT TOPIC category in the front page toolbox. It should only be used for quick dissemination of time sensitive information, breaking news, or links to developments important to the community. Use this subject sparingly, it's intended to allow only the most important information to be readily available to the community ... please don't abuse it.

Human Rights  -  Diaries about human and workers rights  both here and abroad as they relate to migration and the immigrant experience

Interviews - First-hand, original interviews of leaders, activists, authors, etc. done by members of the community.

Legislation Federal

Legislation Local-State

Media Distortion  - Diaries about media bias, misinformation, anti-immigrant spin

Migrant Aid - Dairies about those in need of aid, or those who provide it.

Opinion - Personal opinions, endorsements etc.

Organizing  -  Diaries about organizing efforts on behalf of migrant rights

Policy - Discussions about specifics of immigration policy

Politics - Anything about the politics of immigration, ethnicity or race as it pertains to the immigration issue

Protests - Diaries about specific protest efforts whether they be grassroots or nationally organized

Racism - Diaries exposing the racist undertones that permeate the broader immigration debate

Raids - Anything to do with immigration raids and/or there effects on immigrants, immigrant communities, and the broader community.

Right Wing - Diaries about right-wing politicians, pundits, and organizations anti-immigrant activities

Studies -  Any news, analysis, or interpretations of studies, academic research, demographics, etc that relate to the broader immigration debate.

Tools - Tools used for organizing or action.

- Use this subject to have your diary placed in the URGENT ACTION category in the front page toolbox. It should only be used for quick dissemination of time sensitive information, that must be acted on IMMEDIATELY within the next 24 hours. Use this subject sparingly, it's intended to allow only the most important information to be readily available to the community ... please don't abuse it. Unless your action must be acted on within the next 24 hours please use the "Action Alert" subject

SUBJECTS should be viewed as The Sanctuary's "table of contents" found in the front of a book while the TAGS are similar to a complete "index" at the back.  When used together they provided a very effective way of cataloging the content of the site.

Example of proper tagging: Diary about DREAM Act

SUBJECT: Legislation Federal
TAG: DREAM Act,S.2205

Tag should read: Legislation Federal, DREAM Act, S.2005
